The Beneficiary:

Ottawa School of Speech and Drama has been training the boisterous and passionate young adults of Ottawa since 1988. The school has a course program that includes Acting, Creative Drama, Musical Theatre, Shakespeare, Auditioning Techniques, Improvisation, Voice, Movement, Playwriting and Collective Creations.  I first heard of the school through an employer whose talented daughter was applying to the school.  On June 1st we will be raising funds for OSSD at the Ottawa School of Art.
The Eats:

(107 Fourth Ave. - 613 236 0040 - www.107fourthavenue.com) - On the suggestion of a great friend I ventured into this little hub of cool.  With a great wine selection, a stellar Moroccan olive tapenade, and a large friendly fish tank they have got all things necessary to be on my list of eclectic places to visit.  On June 1st they will provide some samplings for our OSSD benefit.

-East India Food Company
(210 Somerset St. West - 613-567-4634 - www.eastindiaco.com) - With their second donation the East India Food Company will be providing a sampling of Indian fare.  Their Somerset street location though provides a taste of the amazing beauty of Indian art and needs to be visited to be appreciated. Come out June 1st to the Ottawa School of Art for your taste!

-Oz Cafe
(#6-361 Elgin Street - 613-234-0907) - I am very happy to be able to accept a second donation from the formidable OZ Cafe.  This chic bendy little cafe utilizes very creative use of space, and very creative use of ingredients in their fusion style food.  On June 1st we will get another glimpse into the land of OZ.

I have a friend whose father once (maybe twice) went on the most passionate rant about a production that he was involved in with a local Opera company. He told about how he was going to be really getting into the role. Growing a beard, living the part, getting really deep into the role. Opera Lyra has a way of inspiring everyone involved, including extras. Check out the upcoming March 2nd World Beats and Eats benefit as well as the Diva Auction, April 21st.

(825 Bank Street - 234-2412) - This cozy bistro sits on Bank St. in the Glebe amongst a selection of other restaurants quite similar in style and cuisine. The defining characteristics of this locale though is the stellar staff and the creativity of the cuisine. On March 2nd we will be sampled their cuisine, sadly though not their staff.

-Bento Sushi
(606 Rideau St.- 613-562-2563) - With their second donation Bento Sushi will be sampling us a selection sushi that World Beats and Eats has long been waiting for. Our first Sushi donation in 14 Months.

-The Roses Cafe
(1285 Wellington St.- 613-798-9191–523 Gladstone St. - 613-233-5574 - www.rosescafe.com/) - I was at the Bluesfest two years ago, a bit tipsy, wandering the food tent when I out off to my left I heard the words “Butter Chicken”. Me being a vegetarian I cant ignore a combo like that. I wandered toward the tent and although I could not gastronomically partake in the “Butter Chicken”, my olfactory sensations ranked this restaurant as a star flavor purveyor. Samples will be available @ WB&E on March 2nd.

This month we are going to be giving to two groups. February is a month that is all about couples and this month we have coupled together two beneficiaries for your philanthropic pleasure. Oxfam Canada’s objective is that of ending poverty and injustice, and have made an impact of the Ottawa arts and cultural community through their event Music 4 Change. Ottawa School of Art’s objective is that of teaching and promoting the arts, and outside of the obvious contribution of artists to the Ottawa arts and cultural community they also organize the Art Bus, returning this fall. Both quite noble. This is the first beneficiary paring of many that are to come throughout the year.

The Eats:

-La Dolce Vita
(180 Preston Street - 613-223-6329) - This Preston street restaurant has always caught my eye with their sunken patio in the summer months and their patio Christmas tree in the winter months. On February 2nd we will be sampling their eye catching pizza at the O.S.A.

-Agave Grill
(1331 Wellington St.- 613-728-5588) - Last year at this time the winter months were bother some and we received a bit (a whole lot) of a warm up with the salsas, and dips from this amazing southwestern restaurant. This year on February 2nd we will again be warmed up with Agave Grill’s heat at the O.S.A.

-Cocoa Camino
(www.cocoacamino.com) - This fair trade organic brand (produced by La Siembra Co-operative) is in the business of chocolate, great tastes, ethical and environmental standards, and on February 2nd they will be contributing to the business of fun. (World Beats and Eats is not a business but the whole sentence just seemed to work)

This month the musical giveaways are provided by Putumayo World Music- Putumayo has been a staple of international sounds for quite some time. This month they are going to supply us with a musical food sampler.

The Great Canadian Theatre Company has been on my art radar since I randomly stumbled by their Gladstone location after a rather great night of studio party hoping. Since then the World Beats and Eats event has been lucky enough to be the recipient of a GCTC Season Subscription donation each month. We raffle this item off with our other great prizes but are always in awe at how generous they are with us. Now we get to be generous back. January 5th is WB&E for GCTC!!!

The Eats:

-Thyme & Again
(1255 Wellington Street West.- 613-722-6277) - I first experienced the food from this Ottawa catering and fine foods purveyor at a Holt Renfrew Shopping experience. The event was invite only but a colleague of mine was generous enough to give me their invite. On January 5th everyone is invited to sample the truffles from Thyme & Again at World Beats and Eats.

-Par-Fyum
(70 Promenade du Portage - 819-770-1908) - In the Spring of 2005 I made a delivery to Par-Fyum for the fine food shop I was working for at the time. The space was still under construction at the time but it was easy to see that this restaurant would be a very exciting edition to fine dining in the region.

-B.Goods (a bakery)
(b.goods@sympatico.ca) - These cookies, available only at Natural Food Pantry (126 York St.), are a decadent vegans dream. These dairy and egg free cookies are just as chewy and rich as your *other* favorite cookie. Made with whole grain flours, non-hydrogenated oils and organic ingredients, you could almost consider them healthy.

-Elgin St. Freehouse
(296 Elgin St - 613-233-5525) - The Elgin St. Freehouse is located in the space that used to be called the EuroStar. The contrast between the two is easy to see in the new decor and on January 5th we will be able to taste the difference.

When I was planning the event to benefit Dusty Owl Reading Series last September, I was approached one night in a bar by Rob Mclennan and a friend of his. Rob reintroduced himself (we had met before) and he also introduced his friend. His friend was James Moran, the former director of the Tree Reading Series. Although it was too late in the planning to do an event for them that year, I promised myself to get to Tree next year. This year Tree has a vibrant new director Rhonda Douglas and is still going strong with its 2nd and 4th Tuesday happenings at the Royal Oak (161 Laurier Ave. East) and its up coming Gala Reading on November 25th.

The Eats:

-The Wellington Gastro Pub
(1325 Wellington ave.- 613-729-1315) - Chris, the co-owner and chef of this sharp new Westend restaurant, used to always tell me how excited he was at the idea of being part of WB&E while he was head chef of another fine establishment. That potential sponsorship never ended up materializing, but Chris has moved on and we are delighted to be graced on December 1st by the fare from the Wellington Gastro Pub.

-Il Negozio - Caffe Ventuno
(1355 Wellington Street - (613) 729-9100) - This deli, restaurant, grocery store, and cafe is well designed and beautifully decorated (I am a big fan of the Caffe’s lighting disign). On December 1st we will have a chance to sample the tastes of the Caffe Ventuno kitchen.

The Beneficiary:

When I began doing this event (WB&E) in January of 2005 I was new to the idea of promoting. Getting my event idea to people that would be interested and willing to attend seemed a daunting task. After two months compiling email after email, and manually inputting them into my email client, I was told about a great service that this city’s arts and cultural community is provided free of charge. The Artlist is a moderated email based mailing list focused on the distribution of non-commercial information concerning artistic events of interest in Ottawa and the region. Artlist, is the wonderful work of ArtEngine. These folks are “devoted to the propagation of art on the internet and the artistic exploration of new technologies.” This includes making the life of artists and art lovers easier by gracing our inbox’s with the best SPAM I have ever received. PS. World Beats & Eats webspace has been generously donated by ArtEngine since April 2005.

The Eats:

-Chez Lucien
(137 Murray St.- 613-241-0063) - I was convinced for quite some time that Chez Lucien was my little secret. I brought friends there and let them know how great it was with its free juke box (best song-selection 00-11) and its hidden gem charm. I loved it then, and I love it now as it has been found by lots and lots of people. They have an amazing simple menu that is always catering to packed lunch hours and early afterwork diners. We get a bit of my favorite fare on November 3rd.

-Fratelli
( 749 Bank Street - (613) 237-1658 - www.fratelli.ca) - .This Italian favorite (with Glebe, Kanata and Westboro locations) is owned by the charming brothers Roberto & Riccardo. Their donation has already brought exclaims of excitement to the lips of all I tell. I look forward to sampling the food that Fratelli will be showcasing on November 3rd.

Zeke’s work is so wonderful and sharp that I have had it at every World Beats and Eats this year in the form of his amazing shirts (generously donated). His work is the best selling WB&E artists artwork to date, selling out during the Clutch Art group show last December. His last live artistic appearance was to a sold out crowd, most of which were women crowding him at the stage.

Special Guest Host:

Mike MacNeil (a.k.a. the door guy) is still the longest standing, most dedicated volunteer to World Beats & Eats, having donated his time to every single event since the first in January 2005. That’s 22 events at 3 hours each (66 hours), if he were getting paid I would owe him nearing on $800. For this reason (and also his stupendous stage presence) he is perfectly suited to assume the responsibility of guest host for the evening as I (Volunteer/Organizer, Brad Campeau) take the night off to celebrate my birthday at this Special Birthday Edition of World Beats and Eats.

The Beneficiary:

In my first year in Ottawa, I was unknowingly blessed with under-employment. Being under employed left me with copious amounts of time to explore the region with all its culture, nature and people. Being under employed I had little in the form of income. This lead to my love, need, and desire for the artist run centres that often offer free openings and exhibits. One of those innumerable nights of openings I found my self in a gallery filled with piercing orgasmic laughter, emiting from speaker boxes mounted below a collection of rotating clown heads. Very distubing. Very wonderful. This was my first Axeneo7 experience and I still have the handbill. October 25th Axeneo7 is also holding this years installment of their annual fundraiser, The Portrait Gallery II.

The Eats:

-The Table Vegetarian Restaurant

The last time we were blessed with a donation from this westend vegetarian staple (and just great food) we had leftovers. (742 Bank Street - 613-233-2010 - www.feleenas.com) - This Glebe based traditional Mexican restaurant is popular in the summer with their fresh salsas and guacamole on the patio. As we enter fall remember the summer heat with Feleena’s Mexican fare.

Zeke and Dixon together for an exhibiton is going to be my dream show come true. Zeke’s work is so wonderful and sharp that I have had it at every World Beats and Eats this year in the form of his amazings shirts (generously donated). I had been stalking Dixon for quite sometime before I actually met him. I first noticed his amazing street work, I then came across the copious amounts of breathtaking consignment work he has done for local businesses under another name. I was then told that the excentric man that frequented two of my Byward hangouts was the artist in question. I was suprised that such amazing work was all done by a guy with a mullet. I then introduced myself.

The Beneficiary:

Most of the city’s that I’ve lived in have only been blessed enough to have one local community based radio station. This wonderful city has two University based Community Radio stations. These type of stations strive to give the community an alternative to commercial radio with large amounts of local, Canadian and interest driven content. Last year in July World Beats and Eats held a fundraiser for CKCU, and this year we pay tribute to CHUO. They are self described as “quite the rowdy bunch. 250+ volunteers and staff united by our love of the diversity and medium that is campus/community radio.”

The Sweets:

-Planet Coffee
(24A York St - 613-789-6261) - There is one seat in Planet Coffee with a view that looks between two gorgeous buildings lined with trees. It is by far the best coffee shop seat in all of Ottawa. There is one sweet at Planet Coffee that is just about as delightful to look upon. On September 1st we will sample what is arguably the most well refined Double Chocolate Cake in Ottawa.

-Simmilicious
(simmidixit@hotmail.com) - This small creative catering venture is dedicated to providing dreamy sweets and treats for the diverse palette. I have seen the fares of Simmilicious at all the cool parties around Ottawa. I was very happy to have them at our little party.

-Dolfin Chocolate
(www.dolfin.be) - This fine Belgium chocolate is made only better by their exquisite, reusable packaging. Dolfin Chocolates are some of the most creative and carefully made chocolate I have ever had the pleasure of overindulging in. On September 1st we will be treated to samples of their Neopolitian Squares.

-The Tea Store
(53 York St. - 613-241-1291 - www.teastore.ca) - Walking into a tea shop and finding a massive wall filled with different varieties, flavors and types of tea could be daunting if it was not for the experienced, helpful, and informative staff at The Tea Store. September 1st we will be treated to three well selected teas from this Byward Market based shop.
