Scratch Video a mutant hybrid of scratch DJ music and guerrilla TV

scratchvideo/theory

In my original proposal, I set out "to reach a better understanding of this medium." After witnessing people experience scratch video for the first time, I started wondering about their reactions, and realized I needed to dig far past the surface level to really "understand" what was happening. I read about film editing, sound engineering, media theory, visual culture, computer programming, advertising, psychology, pharmacology, animation, culture jamming, electronic music, hip hop, interactivity, and art history.

Studying media, the way we communicate with each other, is one way of learning more about ourselves. Scratch video is uniquely positioned. It evolved from music that has only relatively recently found mainstream success. It is made with digital technology most people are only now gaining access to. It is still considered an underground medium, popular mostly in clubs and in the new media art world. Understanding scratch video is a window to peek into who we are right now and where we may be heading. My research findings are divided into five categories: "resonance", "add tv", "closure", "jpm", and "juxtaposition".
