Scratch video is not the first medium in which people record and then remix TV. The first consumer video cameras, the porta-pak, fostered a DIY spirit around video tape, a technology that had only been in the hands of major networks. Artists began experimenting, using video as a new creative medium. VCRs allowed even greater numbers of consumers to use video to change their relationship with television.
