Scratch Video a mutant hybrid of scratch DJ music and guerrilla TV

Hip hop and electronic music (such as techno, house, jungle or trance) are cultural practices in which DJs and music producers mix existing music (be it beats, bleeps or breaks) to create new sounds. Scratch video grew out of this remix culture, as artists, video editors, and music producers (among others) began adapting these ideas to create a visual accompaniment for music. Visual artists (McLaren, Eisenstein, and Paik are some examples) have long sought to interpret the feeling and structure of music with images. To the directors, editors, digital artists and animators who created the medium, scratch video is what hip hop or techno looks like.

Besides just using the same techniques for composing music, the spirit of hip hop and electronic music directly influence scratch video. The re-appropriation of consumer technology to achieve creative goals. The carefree attitude towards copyright restrictions. The DIY (do it yourself) attitude towards achieving goals. Using loops of samples to create layers which could be selectively added and removed in realtime. And the strong impulse to experiment and try out new ideas, in both the studio and in front of live audiences.
