In this exhibition, contemporary Canadian artist Katrin Smith shines a spotlight on the centuries old practice of fine art printmaking. Each print is an original work of art - the culmination of creating a plate, the inking of that plate and an impression of that plate on paper. This originality is inherent in the printmaking process where variability in the mixing and consistency of the ink, the hand application of ink to the plate, the hand wiping of the plate, the degree of dampness of the paper and the pressure and speed of the press all contribute unique qualities to each individual impression. Printmaking techniques are at once simple yet often challenging. All these variables form a kind of magic where each time is like the first time all over again. Katrin's artistic focus is on the abstract using primarily organic and geometric forms. Chance and accident are embraced and enjoyed.
Katrin's artwork is held in private collections in Canada, the United States and Europe.
