Ukjese VanKampen relies on stereotypes
common to popular conceptions of ‘Indian-ness’. “Call U Metis?” is inspired
by the artist’s find of a rusty Calumet baking powder tin. In the accompanying
painting the original packaging is interpreted. The Calumet brand becomes
“Call U Metis?,” and “Double-Acting” becomes “Indian Act.”
